I need to admit that I still enjoy seeing children in their fancy dresses when going to a birthday party and although my daughter’s birthday is in June but the weather is often unpredictable so I celebrate it indoors.
But I believe challenges are unlimited when outdoors.
In her friend’s outdoor/picnic birthday, my daughter and four other girls (ages 8-10) tried climbing many trees. They first needed to assess and negotiate which trees they could climb. Then, they tested each tree one by one while offering advice and strategies to each other. Realizing their various abilities, they offered many complements cheering up each other.
Looking at this photo, I need to acknowledge the thoughtfulness of the adults who offered this opportunity; by their trustful and hands-off approach; by their respect for children’s rights to take risks to experience their environments; and perhaps more important than all, by role-modeling their love for outdoors, play, and nature.
